If your child is experiencing a dental emergency, such as a broken tooth, severe toothache, or a lost filling or crown, please call our office right away. We will make arrangements to see your child as soon as possible – whether your child is a new or existing patient. The office team will work together to reduce your child’s anxiety and quickly complete treatment. Frenectomy

We are pleased to provide CO2 soft tissue laser dentistry using the renowned Light Scalpel to our patients and their families. This has been instrumental in tongue tie/lip tie frenectomy procedures, improving breastfeeding in infants, speech, feeding and airway issues in toddlers, and teenage postural/sleep problems.

Lip and tongue ties

A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure performed to release the connection of the “frenum,” a connective muscle between two tissues. There are two types of oral frenectomies that are frequently performed on both adults and children for a variety of reasons.

A labial frenectomy is performed on the tissue that connects the lip to the gums. This may be performed on infants aid with breastfeeding, children to help prevent a “gap” and prevent plaque accumulation. 

A lingual frenectomy may also be referred to as the release of tongue-ties (ankyloglossia). This procedure is performed on the connective tissue under the tongue. The procedure is often performed on newborn patients to assist with nursing or on toddlers or older patients who need the surgery to help correct speech or sleep issues caused by limited movement due the the frenum.

Preventative

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends checkups twice a year in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems. Oral hygiene needs change with age and the condition of your child’s teeth and gums. Your pediatric dentist may recommend a checkup schedule that is more or less frequent than twice a year.
Routine dental checkups are vital to good oral hygiene and are the best way to detect problems at their earliest stages which saves unnecessary discomfort, time, and money.

Easy Four-Step Routine
To keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy:
• Brush your child’s teeth twice daily (after breakfast and before bedtime)
• Use dental floss daily
• Clean your child’s tongue regularly by using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper
• See your pediatric dentist for routine dental checkups
Good Oral Hygiene

The key to healthy teeth and gums is keeping plaque and food decay from building up in your child’s mouth. Plaque and food decay attract harmful bacteria that cause cavities, gum disease, and persistent bad breath.

Your child’s tongue also attracts bacteria. During the normal process of eating, tiny fragments of food collect on the tongue. As these fragments decay, bacteria create a filmy white coating on the top of the tongue.

Practice the four-step routine to keep plaque and harmful bacteria from building up in your child’s mouth.

Professional Cleaning
Your child’s teeth are cleaned using special instruments to remove plaque from above and below the gum line. Afterwards, the teeth are polished. Tooth polishing makes your child’s teeth look and feel great. It also smooths tooth surfaces so plaque is less likely to accumulate.

Digital Diagnostics
Digital X-rays: Digital X-rays digital x-rays detect dental problems that cannot be found during a visual exam. We use Digital X-rays digital x-rays that provide instant results and emit 90 percent less radiation. Your pediatric dentist determines how often your child needs to have Digital X-rays.

Infants & Small Children
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child's first visit to the pediatric dentist no later than their first birthday. It is recommended to see your pediatric dentist sooner if any of these dental health risk factors exist:
• Sleeping with a cup or bottle
• Thumb sucking
• Teeth staining
• Down Syndrome

What to Expect
Your child’s dental checkup includes:
• A visual exam of the mouth, face, jaw, and neck
• Digital diagnostics, as determined by your pediatric dentist
• Professional cleaning and polishing of teeth
• Fluoride varnish applied to all surfaces of erupted teeth.

Tooth Restoration

Restorative dentistry in pediatric dentistry typically comprises two procedures: fillings and crowns. Both procedures aim to repair damage to the tooth’s surface, or enamel, and restore the function and esthetics of your child’s teeth.

Fillings

A filling repairs and restores the surface of a tooth that has been damaged by decay, fracture, or wear. A dental filling strengthens the tooth. If tooth decay is not repaired at its early stages, it will worsen and additional or alternative dental treatments may be necessary.

With proper care and routine oral hygiene, a filling has a lifespan of 5-12 years, depending upon the type of filling material used.

When Prescribed

A filling prescription is made when:

  • The surface enamel of a tooth is damaged due to decay, fracture, or wear.
  • A tooth's surface needs to be evened out to improve the ability to bite or chew.

What to Expect

After a thorough exam of your child’s teeth, gums, and supporting bone structure, your pediatric dentist will discuss treatment options with you and answer your questions. If the agreed-upon treatment is a dental filling, your pediatric dentist will:

  • Apply a local anesthetic to the affected area of your child’s mouth
  • Use a hand-held instrument to prepare the tooth by removing the decayed or damaged tooth surface
  • Cleanse the prepared tooth to remove debris and bacteria
  • Isolate the tooth using a small, protective sheet called a "dental dam" to keep it clean and free of saliva during the procedure
  • Select the dental filling material based on the placement of the tooth, the location of the damaged area of the tooth, and the extent of its surface damage
  • Apply adhesives and filling material to the prepared area and shape it to match the look and feel of a natural tooth
  • Expose a special hand-held light to the filling material to harden the repaired surface of the tooth

Mouthguards

A mouth guard is used by athletes of all ages to protect teeth from trauma during competitive and individual sporting activities. The American Association of Orthodontists advocates the use of mouth guards by children and adults during organized and recreational sporting activities.

Custom-made mouth guards are individually designed and created based on your dentist’s prescription. The dentist will take a high-quality impression of the mouth in order to create a model. A mouth guard made of special material is then molded over the model to create a custom, accurate fit. The individualized nature of a custom-made mouth guard makes it more expensive, but custom-made mouth guards deliver the greatest protection and most comfortable fit.

Benefit of Sealants

Even if your child brushes and flosses carefully, it is difficult to clean the tiny grooves and pits on certain teeth. Food and bacteria build up in these crevices, placing your child in danger of tooth decay. Sealants “seal out” food and plaque, thus reducing the risk of decay.

Sealants are only one step in the plan to keep your child cavity-free for a lifetime. Brushing, flossing, balanced nutrition, limited snacking, and regular dental visits are still essential to a healthier, happier smile.
